Characteristics
. Rigorous selection of leguminous plants and grass seeds, annual and perennial, with high capacity for reseeding.
. Allows high stocking rate, adjusted to production capacity.
Reasons for sowing
. Production quantity and quality 3-5 times greater than the existing pasture.
. It can be grazed all year long, although the forage production peak occurs in the spring.
. Production of good quality forage for many years when well implemented and managed.
EXTENSIVO FERTIPRADO Handling
First year
. Pastoreio por curtos períodos de tempo*, 2 a 3 meses após a sementeira (azevém com 5 a 7 folhas), com elevada carga animal de forma a controlar as infestantes.
. Grazing during short periods of time*, 2-3 months after sowing (ryegrass with 5-7 leaves), with high stocking level to control weeds.
. Remove the animals from the grassland at the beginning of the flowering stage to ensure high production of seeds.
* As and when soil conditions permit.
Second year and following years
. Allow the grassland to rest in the first 2-3 weeks after the first rains of autumn in order to encourage the establishment of the plants.
. After this period, grazing must be continuous or rotational with stocking adjusted to the productive capacity.
. In summer, when the grassland is dry and before the first autumn rains, it must be grazed by animals, as much as possible.
. In these grasslands, leguminous plants can fix 100 kg/ha/year of atmospheric nitrogen, thus, the use of nitrogen fertilizers is not recommended.
